Impact Study 2025: Carson Beck
CARSON BECK
Ahh summertime: A lovely time in our college football schedule driven by hot-taking, list-making and sidewalk baking. Affectionally known as Talking Season, this is also when blowhards and engagement farmers tend to dictate the conversations, with not much else is going on in the sports world. And as most can attest, everyone loves a good quarterback debate.
Fresh off wrapping up my annual QB Impact Study, where I chart the top 40-50 returning passers against their most challenging opponents, this analyst is ready to join the fray and guide you towards a more fulfilling discussion. I ground through tape to find traits that translate and metrics that matter — far more illuminating than citing counting stats or scanning box scores. Plus, this exercise has a great track record for singling out the nation’s top signal callers.
This piece will focus on Miami transfer Carson Beck, one of the purest pocket passers around.
IMPACT SLATE: Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, Texas x2.
The Skinny
Gawky pocket passer who can damage any defense within structure. Throws a very catchable ball. A standout attacking the midrange. Aggressive downfield spray that generates explosives. Pressed more year-over year. Stupid high Drop Rate. Messy when moved off his mark or pressured.
The Fat
Carson Beck stumbled a bit in 2024, but that doesn’t mean he’s out of the QB1 race. He has ideal size to see over the line and manage the game from the pocket. His throws are extremely catchable, he can operate a pro-style scheme, and likes to eye big type downfield completions. And if you care about such things, his Wins Above Average score is by far the top mark of anyone ahead of this fall.
In rhythm, Beck has a compelling case to be the nation’s best. He has pretty good eyes surveying the field and is sound getting the ball out. He can work from any set and even take care of business operating from under center. Even with the aid of plenty of scheme elements skewing his stats, his ability to execute dropback progressions is among the best in the class. There are multiple examples of finding the last read and making opponents pay with his processing power. He’s quite sound identifying leverage for single stem routes working vertically.

Though Beck can dink and dunk with the best of them, he’s not afraid to risk the biscuit. In fact, over 41% of his throws against heightened competition topped ten yards downfield, making the top10 in our Impact Study. Moreover, Beck tended to be on-target. Only 17% of these throws had no shot of being caught. Haters will point to another effort of being dismissable attacking deep. But, Beck once again maintained midrange mastery despite facing one of the hardest defensive slates.

Captain Obvious wanted me to remind you: It’s awfully hard to complete passes and obtain cool stats if your targets fail to hang on to every seventh try on average. Granted, some of Beck’s precision did sour year-over-year. But, he still sports the lowest overall Uncatchable Pass Rate; not only across the 2024 SEC season but our study as well. Placing the onus on him seems bad form considering his guys were the ones who just ate popcorn. Even occasionally taking steam off passes didn’t seemingly help diminish the drops.

And the frustration clearly boiled over into other aspects of his game. That along with a half-cocked run game saw Beck often have to bear the weight of generating explosives for UGA’s offense. As his numbers attest, he did a fine job at that. But the aggressive spray saw nearly 23% of his attempts result in contests. Pair that with the aforementioned lower body issues getting knocked down, back, and off-filter, and it’s easy to explain how Beck developed a backbreaking habit of logging boo boos.

Sometimes lacking patience, other times trust, Beck was more prone to lock onto guys and play YOLO ball with his primary read. He did hold his own trying tight windows; but pressing burned him on a number of occasions. Foreground defenders undercut things over the middle and safeties could be guided beyond center field to rob routes.

In a new environment, he’ll look to replicate what his predecessor just did: Reinvigorate his game, refine his offerings, and be the first overall draft pick. Beck might never be a backyard baller and has clear hangups to address. Still, that doesn’t mean his best self as a striker within structure can’t reemerge and help the Hurricanes return to postseason glory.
